Kathmandu

Mustang
The dry, wind-carved kingdom behind the Himalaya, where ochre cliffs and whitewashed monasteries sit under skies that rarely cloud over. Kagbeni, the Muktinath temple and the walled city of Lo Manthang.
Bajura
Far-western Nepal's best-kept secret, and the reason people call it the Switzerland of Nepal. Green meadows roll to the horizon at around 4,200 m, and the Badimalika temple draws pilgrims every Janai Purnima.
Ilam
Tea gardens rolling away to the horizon in eastern Nepal, with mist sitting in the valleys until mid-morning. Sunrise from Antu Danda, a walk through the Kanyam estates, and a cup picked from the hill you're standing on.
Lumbini
The birthplace of Lord Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka pillar and the sacred pond sit inside a quiet monastic zone where countries from across the Buddhist world have each built a monastery.
Rasuwa
A sacred alpine lake at 4,380 m in the Langtang range, frozen for much of the winter and ringed by snow. It is a short, steep trek from Dhunche, and every Janai Purnima the shoreline fills with pilgrims.
Chitwan
Nepal's first national park and the best place in the country to meet a one-horned rhino. Jeep and canoe safaris through elephant grass and sal forest, a Tharu stick dance in the evening, and sunsets over the Rapti river.
Tanahun
A hilltop Newari bazaar frozen in the 18th century — cobbled lanes, carved windows and pastel townhouses with no cars in sight. Climb to Thani Mai temple at sunrise for a wall of Himalayan peaks from Manaslu to the Annapurnas.
Bardiya
Nepal's largest national park, and a quieter alternative to Chitwan for spotting wild tigers, elephants and gharial along the Karnali River. Jeep and canoe safaris through sal forest and grassland, with evenings spent in Tharu villages.
Kaski
A stone-paved Gurung village terraced into the Annapurna foothills, with Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South filling the skyline from almost every doorway. One of the most rewarding short treks in the region, with teahouses along the way.
Gorkha
The hill town where Prithvi Narayan Shah began the campaign that unified Nepal. Gorkha Durbar's whitewashed palace sits on a ridge above the valley, with Manaslu and Himalchuli filling the horizon on a clear day.
Morang
A community-homestay hill village tucked into the same district Paila Travel calls home. Climb the Jephale view tower for a rare low-altitude sighting of both Kanchenjunga and Everest, then settle into a family-run homestay for the night.
Dolakha
Known as the "Switzerland of Nepal" for its rolling green hills and cool climate, Jiri was the original trailhead for Everest expeditions before the Lukla airstrip existed. Sherpa villages and pine forest, with a slower start to the Everest trail.
Dolakha
Home base for the Kalinchowk Bhagwati temple, perched near 3,800 m and reached by a short hike or a cable car ride above the clouds. Winter buries the ridge in snow; on a clear day the view runs across Gaurishankar, Langtang and Ganesh Himal.
Sunsari
Nepal's most important wetland, where the Sapta Koshi spreads into marsh and grassland sheltering the country's last wild water buffalo and more than 500 bird species. A paradise for birdwatchers, with dugout canoe rides through the reeds at dawn.
Manang
A high, dry Himalayan valley on the Annapurna Circuit, where Tibetan-style villages sit under Annapurna II and Gangapurna. Old monasteries, Milarepa's cave and a built-in acclimatisation day — most trekkers pause here before crossing the Thorong La.
Dhankuta
A Magar village above the hill station of Bhedetar, once named one of CNN's most underrated destinations in the world. Wide views of the eastern Himalaya, traditional Magar dance and dress, and cool weather a world away from the Terai plains below.
Taplejung
One of Nepal's most revered Shakti Peeth shrines, perched above 3,700 m in Taplejung with Kanchenjunga rising behind it. A cable car now carries pilgrims and trekkers most of the way up, with the final stretch on foot through rhododendron forest.
Dolakha
A grassy ridge on the Dolakha–Ramechhap border that opens into a full 360-degree horizon — Gaurishankar, Langtang, Ganesh Himal and, on the clearest days, Everest itself. Hindu and Buddhist shrines share the summit among a hundred rolling hillocks.
